Does the ATO Accept AI-Generated Invoices?
As AI tools become common in Australian small businesses, many owners are asking: can you legally use an AI-generated invoice? The short answer is yes: but there are conditions.
The ATO’s Position on AI-Generated Invoices
The ATO doesn’t distinguish between invoices created by a human, accounting software, or an AI tool. What matters is that the invoice contains the correct information required under Australian tax law: not how it was generated.
An AI tool (like ChatGPT, a custom GPT, or an AI-powered invoicing app) can create a compliant invoice as long as you review it and ensure accuracy before sending.
What a Valid Tax Invoice Must Include
Under ATO rules, a tax invoice for amounts over $82.50 (GST inclusive) must include:
- The words “Tax Invoice” clearly displayed
- The supplier’s name and ABN
- The date of issue
- A description of the goods or services
- The GST amount (or a statement that the price includes GST)
- The total price
- The buyer’s identity or ABN (for invoices over $1,000)
If your AI-generated invoice includes all of the above, it’s compliant. The tool that created it is irrelevant.
What to Watch Out For
AI tools can make mistakes: especially with numbers, dates, and ABNs. Before sending or filing any AI-generated invoice:
- Check the ABN: verify it’s correct at abr.business.gov.au
- Check the GST calculation, 10% of the pre-GST price
- Check the date. AI can sometimes fill in today’s date incorrectly
- Don’t use AI to generate fake invoices: this is fraud, regardless of the tool used
AI Invoicing Tools Worth Considering
Rather than prompting a general AI like ChatGPT to write invoices, purpose-built tools handle this more reliably:
- Xero: invoicing with AI-assisted data entry and ATO compliance built in
- MYOB. Australian-focused, handles GST and BAS automatically
- Invoice Ninja: free invoicing tool with automation features
- Rounded: built for Australian freelancers, very simple
Bottom Line
AI-generated invoices are legally acceptable in Australia: the ATO cares about what’s on the invoice, not how it was made. Just make sure every invoice you send (AI or otherwise) includes the required fields, has accurate figures, and uses your correct ABN.
When in doubt, use purpose-built accounting software rather than a general-purpose AI chatbot for invoicing: it’s faster and less error-prone.
