ChatGPT Work Is Live. Here’s What an Aussie Tradie, Cafe Owner, or Bookkeeper Can Actually Hand Off to It.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work on 9 July 2026: a fully autonomous agent that picks up a task, works through it across your apps and files for hours, then delivers finished output. Not a chatbot you query. Not a tool you babysit. A thing you brief and walk away from. That’s a real shift. But “real shift” and “useful for your business right now” aren’t the same thing. This post tests the gap.

What ChatGPT Work Actually Does

You give it a task. It gathers context from your files, apps, and workflows, then works through it (drafting documents, building spreadsheets, writing reports, generating presentations) without needing you to prompt it every step. Powered by GPT-5.6, it’s designed for multi-step work that currently takes a person several hours of back-and-forth. The output lands in front of you when it’s done. That’s the pitch. The question for Australian small business owners is which parts of that pitch hold up when you run actual work through it.

The Honest Delegation Test

Tradie (sparkie, plumber, builder)

Quote follow-up emails are a solid fit. ChatGPT Work can pull the customer name, job details, and quoted figure from a document or email thread, then write a professional follow-up without you touching it. Something like: “Hi Sarah, just following up on the quote we sent Tuesday.” Same deal for supplier emails: “We need 40m of 2.5mm twin-and-earth by Thursday, please confirm stock and pricing.” Invoice drafts from job sheets are another real use case. Give it a template and a completed job sheet and it can produce a clean invoice ready for your review.

It breaks down the moment it needs your trade licence number or insurance certificate details. If those aren’t in its context, you’re back to filling them in yourself. Australian electrical safety requirements and state-specific plumbing codes aren’t something it verifies in real time. You wouldn’t want it pretending otherwise. Real-time supplier pricing is out too. It has no live connection to Reece or Plumbing Plus. It can draft an order request, but it can’t tell you whether the stock exists or what it costs today.

Verdict: Good for admin that lives in text. Not a substitute for your industry knowledge or anything compliance-critical.

Cafe / Hospitality

Staff roster communication is where it earns its keep. If you’ve got a schedule in a spreadsheet or document, it can draft the “here’s your week” message for each staff member. Supplier order emails work well when you brief it clearly: “Hi [produce supplier], we need our usual Tuesday delivery plus an extra 10kg of haloumi this week.” Responding to Google reviews is probably the strongest use case here. Give it your tone guidelines and a handful of example responses, and it can draft replies that sound like you, at scale.

Your POS system is its own closed world. ChatGPT Work has no live access to your Square, Lightspeed, or Kounta data. It can’t see what sold yesterday, what’s running low, or your busiest table times. Real-time inventory management is off the table. Any task that requires knowing what’s actually in your fridge or on your shelf right now needs a human or a dedicated integration.

Verdict: Useful for comms that are currently falling through the cracks. Inventory and operations stay with you.

Bookkeeper / Accountant

Chasing overdue invoices by email is one of the more time-consuming parts of the job, and ChatGPT Work handles the drafts well: “Hi Marcus, this is a reminder that invoice #1042 for ,450 was due 14 days ago.” Month-end report summaries, where you’ve got the numbers and just need prose around them, are a good fit. Client update notes (“Here’s what happened with your books in June”) can be drafted from your existing data.

Live Xero or MYOB data is not in scope without a built integration. ChatGPT Work can’t pull your client’s actual figures unless you’ve pasted them in or uploaded a file. ATO lodgement deadlines are a gap too. It can recite general rules, but it can’t verify what’s actually due for a specific ABN right now. Anything that touches your professional obligations needs your eyes on it before it goes anywhere.

Verdict: Strong for drafting and comms. Keep your hands on anything that touches compliance or live client data.

The AU-Specific Wrinkle: Data Residency

ChatGPT Work processes on OpenAI’s US infrastructure. For most small business tasks, that’s not a problem. But if you’re a bookkeeper handling client financial records, or any business touching health information, you should know that data is leaving Australian shores to be processed. The Privacy Act’s Australian Privacy Principles apply when Australian entities handle personal information, even if it flows overseas. Your clients may reasonably want to know where their data goes. Not a dealbreaker. Worth a line in your AI policy before you hand it files with names, addresses, and financial figures attached.

Bottom Line

If you’re a tradie, cafe owner, or bookkeeper who spends more than an hour a week on routine emails and document drafts, ChatGPT Work is worth testing today. If your work depends on live data from your POS, accounting software, or supplier systems, or touches anything compliance-critical, you’ll hit its limits fast.
