You built your Shopify store in AUD. Your supplier invoices you in USD. And when a customer pays, the money sits with your payment processor for two days before it even touches your bank account. That’s three separate financial layers for a business that runs on one laptop.

The banking setup for Australian eCommerce merchants matters more than it looks. Wrong choices mean paying 3% FX margins on every overseas inventory purchase, or waiting three days to access your own revenue.

This post compares three options dominating Australian eCommerce in 2026: Airwallex (built for international sellers), Zeller (built for Australian businesses), and Stripe (a payment gateway you probably already use). Knowing what each one actually does changes how you combine them.

Airwallex: built for merchants who sell internationally

Airwallex started as a solution for businesses moving money across borders, and that history shows in the eCommerce product. You can hold balances in 20+ currencies, collect payments from international customers in their local currency, and pay overseas suppliers without converting everything to AUD and back.

The FX rate is 0.5% above the interbank rate for major currency pairs (AUD/USD, AUD/EUR, AUD/GBP and others) and 1% for less common currencies. Most banks charge 2–3% margins, so if you’re paying a US supplier $50,000 a year, the difference is around $750–$1,250 in FX fees alone.

For platform integration, Airwallex has native plugins for Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, and Salesforce Commerce Cloud. Australian merchants can use it as their checkout payment processor and business bank in one. The like-for-like settlement feature means USD sales can settle directly into your USD wallet rather than converting to AUD immediately, useful when you need to pay USD invoices regularly.

Domestic card processing costs 1.65% + $0.30 per transaction. International cards cost 3.40% + $0.30. Business debit cards are included, and the account earns 4.05% on AUD balances. There’s no monthly fee on the base plan.

One limitation worth knowing: Airwallex holds an AFSL licence, not an ADI (authorised deposit-taking institution) licence. Deposits are not covered by the Australian Government Financial Claims Scheme, the $250,000 government guarantee that applies to NAB or CBA accounts. For operating cash, most Australian accountants suggest keeping only working capital in Airwallex and holding reserves in a traditional bank.

Zeller: built for Australian businesses, online and in-person

Zeller fits businesses that sell primarily in Australia, especially hybrid operations with both physical and online sales. Its EFTPOS terminal (from $99) charges 1.4% flat for in-person transactions, no monthly fees, no lock-in. Online invoicing charges 1.7% + $0.25, and the virtual terminal charges 1.75% + $0.25 for phone orders.

The free transaction account settles EFTPOS payments nightly. Real-time transfers to other Zeller accounts are instant. No monthly fees, no minimum balance, and unlimited free debit cards.

Where Zeller falls short for eCommerce-first merchants: there’s no native Shopify or WooCommerce payment plugin. You can integrate Zeller with certain POS platforms and sync with Xero for accounting, but if your main sales channel is an online store, you’ll need a separate payment gateway like Stripe running alongside it. That’s not a deal-breaker for many businesses, plenty of AU merchants use Stripe for online checkout and Zeller for the counter, but it means two accounts, two fee structures, and two reconciliation streams.

No multi-currency accounts either. If you buy stock from overseas suppliers, you’re converting through your bank or a separate FX provider. For an AU-only seller, that’s irrelevant. For anyone sourcing internationally, it’s a gap.

Stripe: the payment processor that’s not a bank

Stripe is the most widely used payment gateway for Australian eCommerce, and for good reason. The Shopify Payments integration is native. The API is excellent. Fraud protection via Stripe Radar is included on standard pricing at no extra cost. Domestic card processing is 1.7% + $0.30; international cards are 3.5% + $0.30.

But Stripe is not a bank. It’s a payment processor. Your revenue sits in your Stripe balance until it’s paid out to a bank account you own elsewhere. New accounts wait 7–14 days for the initial payout. Ongoing payouts run on a 2 business day rolling schedule for Australian accounts. You can’t hold a currency balance in Stripe, pay suppliers from it, or use it as a business account. It’s a pipe, not a tank.

Stripe’s practical role for most AU eCommerce merchants is the checkout layer. You accept the payment through Stripe, and the money flows to your actual bank account (Airwallex, Zeller, or a traditional bank) on its payout schedule. The question is what’s on the receiving end.

If you’re internationally active, pointing Stripe payouts to an Airwallex AUD account gives you Stripe’s checkout quality plus Airwallex’s FX infrastructure. If you’re AU-only, pointing Stripe payouts to a Zeller account works fine and keeps the financial stack simple.

Which setup wins for your situation

AU-only seller (Shopify/WooCommerce, AUD revenue, AU suppliers): Stripe for online checkout, Zeller for any in-person sales. Both settle to the same Zeller account. Simple, low-cost, no FX complexity.

International seller (sourcing from Asia or the US, selling globally or to AU customers): Airwallex as your primary financial account. Use the Airwallex Shopify or WooCommerce plugin for checkout, hold USD/EUR balances to pay overseas suppliers directly, and stop converting currencies back and forth. Stripe is optional if you prefer its checkout experience.

High-volume AU eCommerce ($500K+ annually): Contact both Airwallex and Stripe directly. Stripe’s custom pricing starts at volume, and Airwallex offers negotiated FX rates above $250K AUD in conversions. At this scale, the standard card rate comparison matters less than the FX margin and cash-flow timing. Airwallex’s same-day AUD settlement improves working capital compared to Stripe’s 2-day rolling payout, a real difference when you’re ordering stock every fortnight.

Bottom line

Stripe handles checkout well, but it’s not a bank. You need somewhere for that money to live and work for you. For AU-only merchants, Zeller is the cheapest and simplest option. For anyone dealing with international complexity, buying in USD, selling in multiple currencies, or paying overseas contractors, Airwallex is the smarter financial account.

Most growing eCommerce businesses end up combining two of these: Stripe for the checkout, and either Airwallex or Zeller as the banking layer. The combination you choose depends on where your suppliers are invoicing from.
