AI for Etsy and Shopify Sellers: Getting Your Handmade Work Found Online
Making the work is one challenge. Getting people to find it is another, and for most handmade sellers, the second one is harder.
50 AI prompts to help your retail business sell smarter and save time.
Both Etsy and Shopify have distinct discovery mechanics. Understanding how each platform finds buyers for your work, and where AI tools help, can make a real difference to visibility without requiring you to become an SEO expert.
Etsy: How Discovery Works
Etsy is a search engine first, marketplace second. When someone types “handmade ceramic bowl Australia” into Etsy search, the algorithm decides which listings to show based on how well each listing matches the search terms, how recently the listing was updated, and historical performance (views, clicks, sales).
This means your listing copy matters enormously. A gorgeous product with a poorly written listing gets buried. A well-written listing for a good product gets found.
AI helps with this directly.
Writing Etsy Listings With AI
An Etsy listing has several text fields:
- Title (140 characters): the most important SEO element
- Description: tells the story, provides detail
- Tags (13 tags, 20 characters each): keywords Etsy uses for search
- Materials: factual list of what you used
For the title:
Etsy titles work differently from what feels natural. Instead of “Handmade Ceramic Bowl,” a title that gets found looks like: “Handmade Ceramic Bowl | Australian Pottery | Stoneware Salad Bowl | Wheelthrown Bowl Gift”
Ask ChatGPT:
“Write an Etsy listing title for a handmade ceramic bowl made in Australia. It’s wheel-thrown stoneware, teal glaze, about 25cm diameter. It’s suited for salads, fruit, or as a statement piece. Use keyword-rich Etsy title format with pipe separators. 140 characters max.”
For tags:
Ask for help generating 13 tags that cover different search angles: material, style, use, gifting occasion, Australian origin.
“Generate 13 Etsy tags for a handmade Australian ceramic bowl. Each tag must be 20 characters or fewer. Cover: material, style, use, gift-giving occasions, Australian-made angle. Avoid generic tags like ‘handmade’ or ‘gift’.”
For the description:
Etsy descriptions don’t rank heavily in Etsy’s internal search, but they convert browsers into buyers. Tell the product’s story, the dimensions, care instructions, and handling time. Ask AI to draft this from the same product brief you’d use for a regular product description.
Shopify: How Discovery Works
Shopify is an ecommerce platform without a built-in marketplace like Etsy. Your Shopify store gets discovered through external channels: Google search, Instagram, email marketing, and referrals.
That makes SEO on Shopify fundamentally different from Etsy. You’re optimising for Google, not an internal search engine.
Shopify SEO With AI
For Shopify, the key SEO elements are:
- Page title (what appears in Google search results)
- Meta description (the snippet under the title in search results)
- Product description (Google reads this)
- Image alt text (how Google understands images)
Page titles and meta descriptions:
These are the first thing a potential customer sees in Google. They need to include your target keyword and be compelling enough to click.
“Write a Shopify product page title and meta description for a handmade Australian ceramic bowl. Target keyword: ‘handmade ceramic bowl Australia’. Title under 60 characters, meta description under 160 characters. Include a call to action in the meta description.”
Image alt text at scale:
If you have 50 products with multiple photos each, writing alt text for every image manually takes hours. Ask ChatGPT to generate a batch:
“Write image alt text for the following [product] photos. [List photos]. Each under 125 characters. Include the product name, key material, and ‘Australian made’ where relevant.”
The Australian Market Angle
Both Etsy and Shopify benefit from emphasising Australian origin. “Australian made,” “Australian ceramics,” “Melbourne pottery,” “Australian handmade” are all search terms with real buyer intent, particularly for gifting and home goods.
Include these naturally in your listings and descriptions. Don’t force them in where they don’t belong, but make sure they’re present where they fit.
For Etsy: include location-specific tags like “Australian ceramics,” “Melbourne made,” “Australian pottery gift.”
For Shopify: include your location in meta descriptions, page titles where it fits, and in your About page copy.
Getting Reviews
Reviews matter more on Etsy than almost anywhere else. They drive visibility and conversion.
AI can help you draft the follow-up message you send to buyers after purchase:
“Write a short post-purchase message for an Etsy buyer of a handmade ceramic bowl. Ask for a review, keep it genuine and not pushy. Mention that I make everything myself and that feedback helps me reach more people. Under 80 words.”
For Shopify, the same logic applies to your email follow-up sequence. A well-timed review request email converts well. ChatGPT can draft this too.
