Zero Dollar Fix: You’re Losing eCommerce Sales at 2am Because Nobody’s There

Your store doesn’t close at 5pm. Someone is browsing your Shopify at 2am trying to figure out if your product ships to their postcode. Nobody answers. They go somewhere else. You find out about it through an abandoned cart notification that you see when you wake up, and by then they’ve already bought from a competitor.

This is the gap that kills ecommerce sales for small businesses. You can’t be online 24 hours a day. But something can be.

How much this actually costs

Cart abandonment rates in ecommerce sit around 70%, according to the Baymard Institute. Not all of that is a chatbot problem, but a meaningful slice of it is people who had a quick question, got no answer, and left. “Will this fit a standard Australian power outlet?” “Do you ship to rural Queensland?” “Is this available in XL?” These are one-line questions that a chatbot can answer at 2am without you lifting a finger.

There are 162 Bing search citations on the topic of 24/7 AI chatbots for ecommerce, mostly from small business owners actively trying to solve this. It’s a real gap, not a theoretical one.

The free fix: Tidio

Tidio has a free tier that works on both Shopify and WooCommerce. You get a live chat widget, an AI chatbot, and up to 50 AI conversation credits per month on the free plan. For a small store, 50 conversations a month is plenty to start with.

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Go to tidio.com and create a free account. Connect your Shopify or WooCommerce store through the app marketplace.
  2. Install the Tidio plugin. On Shopify, it’s a one-click install from the Shopify App Store. On WooCommerce, install the Tidio plugin from the WordPress plugin directory.
  3. Build your FAQ responses. This is where ChatGPT saves you time. Use this prompt: “I run an ecommerce store in Australia selling [your product type]. Write me 10 FAQ answers for common customer questions about shipping, returns, sizing, and product availability. Keep each answer under 50 words.”
  4. Copy those FAQ answers into Tidio’s chatbot flow builder. Map each question to an answer. This takes about 30 minutes the first time.
  5. Turn on the bot. Test it yourself on mobile before you go live.

The chatbot runs while you sleep. When it can’t answer something, it logs the conversation so you can follow up in the morning.

What to do first when you turn it on

Don’t try to make the bot answer everything. Focus on the three questions that come up most often. Check your support inbox from the last 30 days, pull out the most common ones, and build chatbot responses for those first.

If you’re on Shopify, also set up an automated abandoned cart email while you’re at it. Shopify’s free abandoned checkout email is already in your admin settings under Marketing. It costs nothing and recovers sales you’d otherwise lose.

What to do in the next 30 minutes

Create a Tidio account. Don’t install it yet. Just go to your email inbox and find the last five customer questions you received. Those five questions are the starting point for your chatbot. Write plain answers to each of them, or use the ChatGPT prompt above to polish the language. Then install Tidio and build those five flows.

One hour of setup pays for itself the first time it answers a question at 11pm and keeps a customer on your site.
