Your Customers Are Asking AI About You. Here’s What It’s Telling Them.

Somewhere today, a potential customer opened ChatGPT and typed something like “best bookkeeper in Brisbane” or “who does commercial cleaning in Geelong.” An AI gave them three names. Yours probably wasn’t one of them.

You didn’t see that search. It won’t show up in your Google Analytics. There’s no bounce rate, no session time, no referral source. Just a customer who went to a competitor because that’s what the AI said to do.

That’s the part that should keep you up at night.

The numbers are already moving

Bain & Company found that 44% of US online shoppers now start their purchase journey inside an AI tool, or use a mix of AI and traditional search. Australia tends to lag 12–18 months behind the US on consumer tech adoption, which means this is already happening here, and it’ll be mainstream by the time most small businesses notice.

The difference between this and Google is fundamental. With search, AI used to be the thing that sent traffic to your site. A referrer. A middleman. Now it’s the destination. Many buyers get a recommendation from ChatGPT or Perplexity, form an opinion, and arrive at your website already decided, or they don’t arrive at all.

The conversation about your business is happening without you in the room.

What AI is probably saying about Australian small businesses right now

Go test it yourself. Open ChatGPT, type your category and suburb, and see what comes up.

For most small operators, the tradie, the consultant, the café, one of three things happens. Either they don’t appear at all (AI has no reliable information about them). Or they appear but the description is vague and generic, pulled from half a sentence on their About page. Or they appear but the AI gets something wrong, a service they don’t offer, a category they don’t fit, a price point that’s off.

None of those outcomes is good. But the third one is actively damaging: the AI isn’t just ignoring you, it’s misrepresenting you to buyers who trust it.

Three things you can do this week

1. Claim your entity. AI tools don’t just crawl websites. They cross-reference LinkedIn profiles, Wikipedia pages, and public directories to verify that a business is real and categorise what it does. If your LinkedIn company page is sparse, thin, or absent, that matters now. Same with your Google Business profile. These are identity signals, not just traffic sources. Make sure they say exactly what you want AI to say about you, in clear and consistent language.

2. Write a definitions page. This is a single page on your website that states, in plain technical language, what you do, what category you’re in, and what you’re not. No marketing fluff. No “we’re passionate about” anything. Just: “We are a [category] business that does [X] for [Y clients] in [Z location].” Dry, precise, public, no login wall. That’s exactly what AI wants to index.

If you don’t define your category, AI picks one for you. You might not like the one it picks.

3. Write a comparison page. Search your own category in ChatGPT and see who comes up as the top result. Then write a page on your site that compares you to them honestly, services, approach, pricing structure, client fit. Not a takedown. Just a clear, technical side-by-side. AI rewards businesses that help it understand differentiation. A comparison page tells AI exactly where you sit in the market.

This is a sprint, not a rebrand

These three pages take a weekend to write. You don’t need an agency. You don’t need a six-figure consultant. You need to sit down with a blank doc and write clearly about what you actually do.

The businesses that do this in the next six months will have a structural advantage over those who wait until 2028, when AI traffic is impossible to ignore and everyone is scrambling.

Right now, AI is improvising answers about your business from whatever scraps of information it can find. You can wait and see what it says. Or you can write the script.
