Your AI Can Now Write Your Proposals, Quotes and Presentations. Here’s What That Means for Australian Small Businesses

For years, “AI will save you time” has mostly meant: here’s a smarter search engine, or a chatbot that’ll write a rough paragraph you then paste into Word and spend 20 minutes cleaning up.

That’s changed. Claude’s Cowork feature can now take a prompt or an uploaded PDF and spit out an actual, editable Office file, a Word document, an Excel workbook with charts, a PowerPoint deck you can open and present from. This isn’t “here’s the slide content you can copy-paste.” It produces the file.

That’s a different category of tool.

What’s Actually New Here

Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s AI agent built into Claude Desktop. It went generally available on Mac and Windows in April 2026, and as of July 2026, it’s also available on web, iOS, and Android, so you’re not locked to your laptop.

The Cowork tab is where it gets interesting for business owners. You can ask it to:

  • Create a formatted Excel workbook, with formulas, multiple sheets, charts
  • Build a PowerPoint presentation with themes and structure
  • Draft a Word document with proper formatting
  • Extract data from a PDF and turn it into something structured

These aren’t text files you then have to format. They’re actual Office files, ready to open.

The guide from FelloAI that documented all this puts it plainly: Anthropic’s own data from 1.2 million Cowork sessions shows that 91.3% had nothing to do with coding. The single biggest use category was business process work, pulling together scattered updates, building reports, reconciling spreadsheets. That’s the small business owner’s life, basically.

What It Looks Like in Practice

Here’s what this actually looks like for different types of Australian small businesses:

The tradie quoting a job

You’ve got a scope-of-works PDF from a client, job details, materials list, site conditions. Upload it to Cowork. Ask it to turn that into a professional Word quote template. You get a formatted document with your job breakdown, pricing rows, terms section. You fill in your numbers and send it. What used to take 45 minutes of Word wrestling takes ten.

The accountant preparing monthly reports

Describe the report you need, client, period, key metrics to include. Cowork builds an Excel workbook: multiple tabs, formulas, charts. Your client gets something that looks like you spent hours on it. You spent 20 minutes.

The cafe owner pitching to a new supplier

You want to impress a potential wholesale coffee supplier. Describe your business, your current volumes, what you’re looking for. Cowork builds a PowerPoint deck, actual slides, structure, a professional opener. You walk into that meeting looking like you’ve got your act together.

The consultant turning meeting notes into a client presentation

After a discovery call, you’ve got a page of rough notes. Upload them. Ask Cowork to build a client presentation from the key points. You get editable slides back in minutes, not the next morning.

In every case, you’re not getting a suggestion. You’re getting a file.

The Honest Bit: What You Actually Need

The main thing to know: this isn’t the free Claude website at claude.ai. Cowork requires:

  1. Claude Desktop, free download from claude.com/download. Available on Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel) and Windows 10/11.
  2. A paid plan, Free tier doesn’t include Cowork. The Pro plan ($20 USD/month) gives access. If you’re doing 5+ serious tasks a day, Anthropic recommends the Max plan, but Pro is the starting point.
  3. Time to set up folder access, you grant Cowork access to specific folders on your machine. Start with one folder, read-only, until you know how it behaves. (There’s a famous story of an early user giving Cowork delete permissions on the wrong folder. 15,000 family photos gone. Don’t do that.)

The learning curve is real but short. Most business owners who’ve used it report being productive within an afternoon.

There’s one more thing worth flagging: the Cowork feature has had some big updates recently. As of July 2026, Anthropic added web and mobile access (you can now trigger tasks from your phone), plus cloud sessions that keep running even after you close your laptop. The pace of change here is fast, what it can do in six months has probably expanded again.

Is It Ready for Your Business?

If your week involves producing documents, quotes, proposals, reports, decks, spreadsheets, then yes, this is worth trying. The setup is straightforward, the starting cost is reasonable, and the gap between “asking an AI for help” and “getting a finished file” is the thing that’s actually changed.

The businesses most likely to feel the impact immediately:

  • Tradies and contractors who quote jobs regularly
  • Accountants, bookkeepers, and financial advisors creating client reports
  • Consultants who produce slide decks and proposals
  • Any small business owner who has ever spent a Sunday afternoon reformatting a Word doc

This is what “AI for business” looks like when it stops being theoretical. You describe what you need. You get a file back. You send it.

For Australian small businesses that are still typing into a chatbot and copy-pasting into Word, there’s a faster way now. It requires a bit of setup, Claude Desktop, a paid plan, ten minutes of configuration, but the payoff is documents that used to take hours, done in minutes. Worth trying before your competitors do.
