How a Sydney Fashion Brand Ditched the Photography Studio Using AI
Composite case study based on real patterns from Australian e-commerce businesses using AI. Names are illustrative.
Priya runs an online women’s fashion label from Sydney: around 200 SKUs, four collections a year, entirely DTC through her own Shopify store and Instagram. For three years, product photography was her biggest cost: a photographer, a studio hire, a stylist, models. AU$3,000-5,000 per collection, plus weeks of scheduling and turnaround time. Last year she changed her approach almost entirely. Here’s what she does now.
The Old Way
Studio photography: book photographer (AU$1,200/day), studio hire (AU$400/day), model (AU$600/day), stylist (AU$400/day). Shoot 50 pieces in a day if everything goes perfectly. Wait 2 weeks for edited images. Upload. Repeat four times a year.
The New Way: Ghost Mannequin + AI Backgrounds
Priya now photographs all garments on a ghost mannequin (an invisible mannequin that creates a 3D shape without a model) against a plain white background in her own studio space: a corner of her warehouse with a decent camera and two softbox lights. Total setup cost: AU$800 one-time.
She then uses Adobe Firefly and Canva’s AI background generator to place garments in contextual scenes: a Sydney cafe terrace, an outdoor market, a coastal setting, a minimal studio. The AI generates the background and composites the garment realistically. She QCs every image before it goes live.
For her lifestyle imagery: the shots that go on the homepage and in ads: she uses Midjourney with detailed prompts to generate full scenes featuring her clothing styled on AI-generated models. She’s transparent with her audience that lifestyle imagery uses AI; her customers have responded positively.
Product Descriptions
She also uses AI for every product description. A prompt gives ChatGPT the garment details (fabric, fit, measurements, styling notes) and it returns a description in her brand voice. 200 product descriptions that used to take a week of writing now take an afternoon.
The Numbers
- Old cost per collection: ~AU$4,000-5,000 in photography
- New cost per collection: ~AU$200 (her time + AI tools)
- Adobe Firefly: included in Creative Cloud (~AU$87/month she already paid)
- Midjourney: ~AU$15/month
- ChatGPT Plus: ~AU$28/month
- Annual saving: ~AU$15,000-18,000 in photography costs
What Customers Think
Conversion rates have stayed consistent. Returns from fit issues are slightly down because she now photographs every garment flat and provides detailed measurements alongside the AI imagery. She was nervous about the response when she disclosed AI imagery: her audience shrugged. They care about the clothes, not how the photos were made.
What Still Needs a Human
Video content. Reels, TikTok, try-on videos. AI can’t replace the human element here yet and her video content consistently outperforms static images for discovery. She still hires a videographer for one shoot per season, which is now her only significant photography cost.
