State of AI for Australian Small Business 2026: What the Data Actually Shows
Two-thirds of Australian small businesses are now using AI. Less than one in twenty are using it well.
That’s the sharpest finding from our annual State of AI for Australian Small Business report, a synthesis of thirteen major research studies published between 2025 and mid-2026, covering adoption rates, productivity gains, trust barriers and the economic gap that’s opening up between businesses that have committed to AI and those still watching from the sidelines.
The number that matters most is 2.8
According to MYOB data drawn from hundreds of thousands of Australian businesses, SMEs using AI are growing 2.8 times faster than those that aren’t. That gap is not theoretical. It’s already in the revenue figures.
Here’s what else the data shows:
Adoption is real but shallow. Between 43 and 69 per cent of Australian SMBs are using AI in some form, the range depends on whether you count occasional use or regular use. The Australian Government’s AI Adoption Tracker puts the figure at 44 per cent for February 2026. Intuit’s larger dataset puts regular use at 69 per cent. Either way, the direction is clear and the pace has accelerated sharply.
Most businesses are barely getting started. Deloitte’s AI Maturity Index, built from a survey of more than 1,000 Australian SMBs, found that while two-thirds are using AI, only 5 per cent are fully enabled to realise its potential. Moving from basic to intermediate use is associated with a 45 per cent increase in profitability. Moving from intermediate to fully enabled: 111 per cent.
Trust is the real barrier, not cost. The Australian Government’s AI Adoption Tracker found that 65 per cent of non-adopting businesses cite either distrust in AI decision-making or a strong preference to keep humans in control. That’s a confidence problem, not a capability problem. And it has a generational dimension: Amplitude research found that 31 per cent of employees aged 18 to 34 trust AI to help inform their decisions, versus 4 per cent of those over 55.
The entry point is the stuff you hate doing. MYOB’s Paul Robson describes AI’s most immediate value in Australian small business as “always-on compliance”, BAS preparation, record keeping and reconciliation happening in the background as transactions occur, not scrambled together at quarter end. The National AI Centre agrees: the tools most likely to stick are those that fit into workflows already in use.
Australia leads the world on responsible AI, and lags on productivity. KPMG’s Q1 2026 Global AI Pulse found Australia out in front on AI governance (31 per cent of businesses actively implementing governance policies, vs 26 per cent globally). But only 35 per cent are prioritising productivity gains through automation, against 42 per cent globally.
Globally, Australia is a leader, not a laggard. Forrester’s 2025 AI adoption research ranks Australia in the global top four countries for AI adoption, alongside Singapore, New Zealand and South Korea. 71 per cent of Australian businesses plan to increase AI investment in 2026, the highest proportion in Asia-Pacific, according to CPA Australia.
The full report covers all of this in detail, adoption rates by industry, the profitability curve by AI maturity level, the five barriers Deloitte identified, what the generational trust gap means specifically for small business owners, and what practical first steps the data actually supports.
