How to Use AI to Plan and Promote a Product Drop
A product drop is more work than a regular sale. You’re not just listing a product. You’re building anticipation, creating a launch moment, and then following up to capture everyone who missed the initial window.
Done well, a drop drives a spike in sales and new customer acquisition that a standard “new product” post never achieves. Done badly, you’ve worked for weeks on something that lands with a shrug.
AI doesn’t make the product. It handles the content, and the content of a drop is significant.
The Pre-Launch Phase: Building Anticipation
The week or two before a drop is where most content work happens. You’re trying to create the feeling that something exciting is coming, without revealing everything at once.
Teaser content
Start with 3 to 5 pieces of teaser content across the week before the drop. These hint at the product without showing the full picture: a close-up detail, a material shot, a behind-the-scenes moment from production.
Use AI to write the captions. The tone here is different from regular product content: more minimal, more mysterious, creating a sense of “pay attention to this account this week.”
Prompt example:
“Write 5 Instagram captions for the week leading up to a product drop. The product is [brief description]. Each caption should hint at the product without revealing it. Tone: intriguing, minimal, a bit cinematic. Don’t use exclamation marks. Each under 100 characters.”
Email teaser
If you have an email list (even a small one), a teaser email a week before the drop is worth sending. It creates a sense of insider access: your email subscribers find out first.
ChatGPT can draft this. Tell it:
“Write a teaser email for a product drop. The product is [describe it]. Send date is [date]. Tone: genuine, exciting without being pushy. 100 words max. Include a subject line.”
The Launch Day: Announcement Content
Launch day is the peak content moment. You need:
- Primary Instagram post, the full product reveal, proper description
- Story series, showing the product in detail, how to buy
- Email to list, the full announcement with link
- Optional: paid post, if you’re boosting on Instagram
AI can draft all of these from one detailed brief. Give it:
- Product name and description
- Price and where to buy
- How many units available (if limited)
- The story behind it (why you made it, what problem it solves)
- Tone of voice
Prompt for the full launch package:
“Write launch day content for a product drop. Product: [name], [description], $[price]. Available from [date] at [link]. Limited to [X] units. The story: [brief origin story]. Write: (1) a 150-word Instagram caption, (2) a 3-part Story sequence (text overlays, one per slide), (3) a 120-word email with subject line. Tone: [your brand voice].”
The Post-Launch Phase
Most small businesses treat the drop as over once the announcement goes out. That’s a missed opportunity.
“Selling fast” content
If the drop is performing well, post one update showing it. “X units left” or “selling faster than expected” drives urgency for people who saw the announcement but haven’t bought yet. This post takes 5 minutes to write, and it converts fence-sitters.
Recap content
After the drop closes (whether you sell out or just end the window), post a recap. What happened, how it went, what’s coming next. This builds the narrative for the next drop. It trains your audience to pay attention next time.
Lapsed buyer follow-up
If you have an email list and can track who clicked the announcement but didn’t buy, a 48-hour follow-up email (“missed out?” or “a few units still available if this was you”) converts a meaningful percentage. Ask ChatGPT to write this:
“Write a 72-hour follow-up email for people who saw our product drop announcement but didn’t buy. Tone: helpful, not pushy. Include a subject line. 80 words max.”
A Drop Content Calendar (AI-Generated)
You can ask ChatGPT to create your entire drop content calendar in one prompt:
“Create a two-week content calendar for a product drop. The drop date is [date]. I post on Instagram and send emails to my list. Include: pre-launch teasers (Week 1), launch day content (Week 2, Day 1), sell-through updates, and a post-drop recap. Format as a table with date, platform, content type, and brief description.”
This takes three minutes and gives you a complete schedule to work from.
The Email Sequence
A three-email sequence for a product drop:
- Teaser (7 days before): something big is coming
- Launch (day of): here it is, here’s how to get it
- Last chance / recap (48 hours after launch or when selling out): urgent follow-up or thank-you
ChatGPT or Claude can draft all three in one session. Give it the product, the dates, and the tone. Edit for your voice.
