Gemini Spark Is Now in Australia — Here’s What It Actually Does for Small Business
Google rolled out Gemini Spark to Australian subscribers this week, and if you’re on Google AI Pro or Ultra, you’ll see it land in your Gemini window over the next few weeks. What Gemini Spark Actually Is
Spark is Google’s shift from a chat assistant to an active agent. Where regular Gemini waits for you to ask a question, Spark runs tasks in the background, on Google’s cloud, even when your laptop is closed or your phone is locked. It’s powered by Gemini Flash 3.5 and connects natively to Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar with zero setup required beyond opting in.
The important caveat: it won’t send emails or spend money without checking with you first. Google has baked in a confirmation step for high-stakes actions. That’s not a limitation, that’s the sensible default.
According to Google’s Australian announcement, Spark is rolling out now to Ultra subscribers, with Pro subscribers getting access as part of a staged rollout over the coming weeks.
Four Things It Can Actually Do for Small Business
1. Inbox triage and draft responses
The most practical use case for anyone running a small business: set Spark to scan incoming customer inquiries, draft response emails based on your services and pricing, and save them to drafts for your review. You come in Monday morning to a folder of ready-to-send replies. Google even demos this specifically in their “hustling entrepreneur” prompt example. Pair that with the “productive professional” prompt, having Spark read your last 50 sent emails and build a writing style guide, and you’re effectively cloning your email voice.
2. Meeting prep and document drafting
Spark can pull from your Google Calendar and emails to prep briefing docs before meetings. Ask it to summarise the last month of correspondence with a client before your catch-up call. Or have it draft a project update from your notes and send it to Docs for your review. It works best when your information already lives inside Google Workspace, if you’re across multiple platforms, the value drops quickly.
3. Subscription and invoice auditing
Google’s own example: every month on the 1st, audit your Gmail invoices from the previous month, flag any subscription price hikes, and pre-draft cancellation emails. For a small business owner carrying a dozen SaaS subscriptions, this one pays for itself fast if you actually act on the drafts.
4. Calendar and scheduling management
Spark can monitor emails for booking confirmations and automatically slot them into your calendar, add details to a tracking spreadsheet, and flag conflicts. It’s the kind of admin that eats 20 minutes a day in copy-paste hell. Small, but real.
