Canva’s AI Bet Just Got Expensive — And It Could Flow Through to Your Subscription

Canva just told investors its AI bill was bigger than expected. That’s your problem too.

Canva posted Q2 2026 revenue of $921.9 million, up 25% year on year, which would normally be a celebration. Except Canva had guided higher, and the reason for the miss was blunt: the cost of running frontier AI models blew out, delayed product launches, and forced a rare revenue downgrade. Australia’s most valuable private tech company, valued at $60 billion, miscalculated its own AI spend. If Canva couldn’t see this coming, what chance does your small business have?

Most small business owners treat Canva as a flat subscription, $18 a month for Pro, done. But Canva’s financials reveal something more uncomfortable. The AI has baked into Magic Studio, background removals, text-to-image, Dream Lab, AI video, cost Canva real money every time you click generate. Canva absorbed those costs to keep the product feeling free-ish. Now the bill has caught up with them.

When that happens at a company running at $4 billion in annualised revenue, the pressure flows to you.

If you’re wondering why Canva has been layering in credit limits, AI Pass add-ons at $100/person/month, and per-seat Business pricing over the past year, this is why. The unit economics of offering AI-heavy has at a flat subscription price don’t work when the underlying compute costs keep climbing. Canva is trying to close that gap, and small businesses are directly in the path of the corrections.

The broader pattern is not unique to Canva. A 2026 AI cost governance report found that 49% of companies had to reprice AI-powered products because their cost projections were wrong. Only 11% of organisations could forecast their AI spending within 10% accuracy. Canva is not an outlier. It just had to tell investors.

Short term, nothing obvious changes. Canva Pro is still $18/month and the free tier still works. But the credit caps are tightening. The AI Pass upsell at $100/person/month becomes harder to avoid if you’re doing serious content production. The Business plan at $20.83/user/month billed annually will get less negotiable as Canva shores up its margins. Expect the free-feeling AI has to shrink as Canva recalibrates what it can afford to subsidise.

Before your next renewal, run through a side-by-side comparison of design and AI tools to see whether you’re getting real value from the AI has or just paying for access you barely use. A five-person team on Canva Business that’s not hitting the monthly AI credit limit is paying $104/month for headroom they probably don’t need. There are cheaper routes.

Any AI-heavy subscription that feels underpriced is being subsidised somewhere. That subsidy has a shelf life. Canva’s revenue miss shows what happens when it runs out.
