How Australian Professional Services Firms Are Billing for AI Work
If an accountant uses AI to produce a tax return in 20 minutes instead of two hours, should the client pay the same fee? It’s a question dividing Australian professional services firms: and the answer will reshape how expertise is priced.
The Billing Dilemma
Traditional professional services billing has been based on time: hourly rates multiplied by hours worked. AI disrupts this in a fundamental way: it dramatically reduces the time required for tasks that used to take hours.
Three models are emerging in response:
1. Fixed-Fee / Value-Based Pricing
Many firms are accelerating their move to fixed-fee packages. The client pays for the outcome (a completed tax return, a reviewed contract, a strategic plan) rather than the time. AI efficiency goes to the firm’s margin.
2. Passing Savings to Clients
Some firms are using AI efficiency as a competitive differentiator: reducing fees to win clients from traditional competitors. This works in competitive markets where price sensitivity is high (basic bookkeeping, standard conveyancing).
3. Transparency and Disclosure
A growing number of firms are disclosing AI use to clients and adjusting fees accordingly. Professional bodies including CPA Australia and the Law Society of NSW have begun developing guidance on disclosure obligations.
Regulatory and Ethical Considerations
Australian professional services operate under strict regulatory frameworks. Key considerations for AI use include:
- Accuracy liability: the professional remains responsible for AI-assisted output, regardless of which tool produced it
- Client data handling: inputting client financial or legal data into third-party AI tools may breach confidentiality obligations
- Disclosure: some professional bodies are moving toward requiring disclosure when AI materially contributes to advice
- Supervision: junior staff using AI tools still require oversight; AI doesn’t replace professional judgement
What Small Business Clients Should Know
If you’re paying for professional services, it’s reasonable to ask your accountant, lawyer or consultant whether they’re using AI tools: and whether that’s reflected in their fees. Most will welcome the conversation. The honest answer from the best firms is: yes, we use AI, and that’s why we can deliver faster without compromising quality.
