Australian Businesses Are Using AI for the Boring Stuff — And That’s Smart
Anthropic’s Australia boss stood at a NAB event this week and accidentally paid Australian small businesses the best compliment they’ve ever received, while framing it as a problem.
Theo Hourmouzis, Anthropic’s General Manager for ANZ, told the crowd on August 24: Australian Claude users put 5.8% of their usage toward back-office tasks, invoicing, inventory, general admin, compared to 4.7% globally. Australians also under-index on coding. Hourmouzis called this a gap. An “opportunity.”
He’s wrong. The data proves it.
The “Coding Gap” Framing Gets It Backwards
Coding is a specialist skill. Most small business owners in Australia don’t need to build software. They need to get through their admin pile before dinner so they can pick up the kids. The median Australian SMB owner runs a cafe, a tradie business, a retail shop, or a professional services firm. None of them need to write Python scripts. All of them have invoices sitting unpaid because there aren’t enough hours in the week.
A 1.1 percentage point difference in coding usage is not a national failure. It’s a business priority. The businesses Anthropic is talking about aren’t tech companies sitting on development budgets. They’re owner-operators who need 90 minutes back from Tuesday’s invoice run. Telling them to go build software is like telling someone with a leaking roof to redesign the house.
Back-office AI has immediate, measurable ROI. You automate invoice chasing, and the payoff shows up in your cash flow the same week. You plug AI into your inventory management, and you stop ordering stock you don’t need. Those aren’t vanity metrics. They’re the kind of time savings that keep a small business owner solvent.
The Data Validates Exactly What We’ve Been Writing About
We’ve been covering practical AI for Australian SMBs for over a year, the real-world, here’s-how-to-save-two-hours-on-admin stuff. This Anthropic data is the first independent confirmation that adoption is happening exactly where we said it would: in the back office.
Our industry and function matrix maps this out across sectors. The pattern shows up everywhere: retailers using AI for bookkeeping and back-office, tradies using it for cash flow, sole traders using it to get out from under their admin load.
Australian businesses are doing the sensible thing first.
Anthropic’s Own Product Team Agrees
In May 2026, Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business, a set of integrations built into tools AU businesses already use: QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Canva, and DocuSign. Daniela Amodei described it as AI that “takes on the work that piles up after hours, like planning payroll, chasing invoices or kicking off a marketing project.”
That’s back-office work. Anthropic’s product team built the tool for exactly the use case that Hourmouzis is calling a gap, three months before he said it.
What AU SMBs Should Do Next
If you’re already using AI for admin, you’re ahead. There are real gains left in payroll, compliance, supplier communication, and cash flow forecasting, and most of those integrations now exist inside tools you’re already paying for.
If you haven’t started yet, back-office is still the right entry point. Back-office problems are universal and the feedback loop is fast. You know within days if it’s working. Start with whatever costs you the most time right now: invoices, purchase orders, payroll queries, supplier emails. Plug Claude into QuickBooks or Google Workspace, run it for two weeks, and measure the hours back. That’s the whole pitch. The five ways Australian SMBs are using AI right now gives you a practical starting point if you’re still mapping the options.
Coding, agentic workflows, custom software, those are the next layer. The foundation comes first. Australian businesses that started with admin aren’t behind; they’re building on solid ground.
