Zero Dollar Fix: You Have No Idea How Many People Are Visiting Your Website
You’ve had a website for three years. You have no idea how many people visit it, which pages they read, or where they leave. You’re spending money on ads or time on social media pointing people there, and you’re completely blind to what happens next.
This is more common than you’d think. A 2022 survey by Squarespace found that 58% of small business owners in Australia don’t track website traffic at all. They just have a site and hope for the best.
Why flying blind actually costs money
Here’s a concrete example. Say you’re running a $200 Facebook ad sending people to your Contact page. If you don’t have analytics, you have no idea whether anyone clicks through. You’re paying $200 and guessing.
With GA4 set up, you’d see exactly how many people landed on that page, how long they stayed, and whether they filled out your form or left after five seconds. That’s the difference between making decisions based on data and making decisions based on vibes.
It also tells you what’s actually working without ads. Maybe your “Services” page gets 300 visitors a month from Google searches and you never knew it. That’s free traffic you could build on.
The fix: Google Analytics 4, free, takes 20 minutes
GA4 is Google’s free website analytics tool. It replaced Universal Analytics in 2023 and it’s what you should be using now. Free forever, no catches.
Step 1: Create a GA4 account.
Go to analytics.google.com and sign in with a Google account. Click “Start measuring”. Enter your account name (just your business name is fine) and click Next.
Step 2: Set up a Property.
A property is just the website you want to track. Enter your business name, your time zone (Australia/Sydney or wherever you are), and your currency (AUD). Click Next, fill in your industry and business size, then click Create.
Step 3: Add the tracking code to your website.
This is the part most people worry about. It’s actually straightforward.
GA4 gives you a “Measurement ID” that looks like G-XXXXXXXXXX. How you add it to your site depends on your platform:
- WordPress: Install the free plugin Site Kit by Google. Connect it to your GA4 account and it handles everything automatically.
- Squarespace: Go to Settings, then Analytics, then paste your Measurement ID in the Google Analytics field.
- Wix: Go to Marketing Integrations, click Google Analytics, and paste the Measurement ID.
- Custom site: Paste the tracking snippet GA4 gives you into the <head> section of every page.
Step 4: Wait 24 to 48 hours, then check your data.
Once the code is live, data starts flowing immediately. By tomorrow you’ll see real traffic numbers. Open GA4, go to Reports, then Overview. You’ll see how many people visited, what pages they looked at, where they came from, and what device they used.
Step 5: Set up one conversion event.
A conversion event tells GA4 when something important happened, like someone filled out a contact form or clicked your phone number. In GA4, go to Configure, then Events. You can mark any event as a conversion by toggling it on. Start simple: mark “contact_form_submit” or “page_view” on your thank-you page as a conversion.
This is where analytics goes from interesting to useful. You’ll know which traffic sources are actually generating leads.
What to do in the next 30 minutes
- Sign in to analytics.google.com and create your GA4 account and property.
- Get your Measurement ID.
- Add it to your website using the method that fits your platform.
- Come back tomorrow and look at your first real traffic report.
Zero cost. Twenty minutes. You’ll finally have numbers instead of guesses.
