Tradify vs ServiceM8 vs Fergus: Which Job Management App is Right for Your Trade Business? (2026)

The answer starts with one question: how many people are on your crew?

Not which app has the best features. Not which one costs less per seat. Just how many people are working for you, because that single number narrows the field faster than any feature comparison will. Pick the wrong platform for your team size and you’ll spend year one fighting the software instead of running jobs.

This comparison covers the three platforms that dominate the Australian trades market below the Simpro/AroFlo enterprise tier: ServiceM8, Tradify, and Fergus. Pricing confirmed April 2026. Sources at the bottom.

The three apps, in plain English

These three platforms are not interchangeable. Each was built for a different kind of trade business.

ServiceM8 is Australian-built and mobile-first. It was designed specifically for reactive service work: a job gets called in, someone drives out, fixes the thing, takes a photo, gets a signature, and invoices on the spot. That entire cycle can happen in under a minute on ServiceM8. iOS is native; Android exists but runs as a web app, which matters a lot if your crew uses Samsung phones. GST invoicing works correctly out of the box, which sounds obvious until you’ve spent an hour configuring it in something built for the US market. The support team is in Australian time zones, which also matters more than most people expect.

Tradify came out of New Zealand and is now owned by Access Group in the UK. About 30,000 customers globally, with the Australian market heavily skewed toward electricians and plumbers in the 1–10 staff range. Where ServiceM8 wins on speed, Tradify wins on depth: proper job costing, project tracking, full two-way sync with Xero, MYOB, and QuickBooks Online. Both iOS and Android apps are fully native, which is a real advantage over ServiceM8 for Android-heavy crews. The learning curve is steeper, Tradify’s interface is designed around a workflow that rewards users who take the time to set it up properly. The downside is pricing that ramps fast once your crew grows past three.

Fergus has the strongest CRM of the three. Built in New Zealand, it’s oriented around customer relationships and recurring maintenance contracts, the model that drives HVAC and refrigeration businesses where the same client shows up three or four times a year and you need to track job history, warranty work, and scheduled maintenance in one place. Reviews on Capterra call out real support problems (one reviewer: “get fobbed off, someone will call but they never do”), and the pricing doesn’t bear out the “middle ground” reputation it’s picked up on r/AusElectricians. For straightforward job-to-invoice electrical or plumbing work, Fergus is probably overkill and definitely not cheaper than Tradify.

Pricing: what you’ll actually pay

All prices are in AUD, ex GST, confirmed April 2026 via Stackpick.com.au direct verification with Tradify (source).

UsersServiceM8Tradify Pro ($52/user)Fergus Pro ($68/user)
1$25/month$52/month$68/month
3$29/month$156/month$204/month
4$79/month$208/month$272/month
6$79/month$312/month$408/month

ServiceM8 plan structure: Starter at $25 (1 staff), Growing at $79 (unlimited staff). The unlimited-staff pricing on the Growing tier is the biggest cost advantage in this comparison. At four crew members, ServiceM8 costs $79/month versus Tradify’s $208/month, $129/month saved, or $1,548/year. That gap widens as you add people: at six users, you’re comparing $79 to $312 every month.

Tradify plan breakdown: Lite ($48/user/month), Pro ($52/user/month), Plus ($62/user/month). The SmartTools AI quote generation only unlocks on the Plus plan at $62/user/month, that’s $40 more per month for a four-person team compared to Pro. A four-person team using Plus pays $248/month.

Fergus sits at $48/month Basic or $68/month Professional per user, with custom pricing for teams of ten or more. No unlimited-staff tier, so costs scale linearly with headcount. The per-user pricing doesn’t clearly justify choosing Fergus over Tradify unless the CRM and recurring-contract has are the point of the whole exercise.

How to pick: a decision matrix

By team size:

  • Solo or two people: try both ServiceM8 and Tradify free trials. Either works, and the decision mostly comes down to whether you live on iPhone or Android. ServiceM8’s Starter plan at $25/month is hard to argue with for a sole trader.
  • Three to six people: ServiceM8 wins on cost alone unless your workflow genuinely requires Tradify’s project depth. The $1,548/year difference at four people is real money.
  • Six-plus or complex multi-stage projects: look at Simpro or AroFlo. That’s a different tier of software built for a different operating model, and it’s worth the step up if your jobs routinely span weeks and involve multiple subcontractors.

iOS vs Android:

This gets undersold in most comparisons. ServiceM8’s Android app runs in a web view, it works, but field workers will notice the difference, especially on lower-end devices. Tradify’s Android app is fully native. If most of your crew runs Samsung phones, Tradify or Fergus will feel faster and more reliable day-to-day. This alone can determine adoption.

Reactive service work vs project work:

ServiceM8 is purpose-built for quick-turnaround reactive jobs. Call comes in, job goes out, invoice lands same day. Tradify handles that workflow, but it earns its keep on jobs that run across multiple stages, need detailed cost tracking, or require variation management and proper job costing. If you’re running electrical fitouts on construction sites or multi-week plumbing projects, Tradify’s structure is worth the higher per-user cost.

CRM and recurring contracts:

Fergus is the only one of the three with a CRM worth calling a CRM. If recurring maintenance agreements drive your revenue model, HVAC servicing, commercial refrigeration, fire safety systems, Fergus’s customer history and scheduled maintenance tools are better than the other two by a clear margin. For pure break-fix or installation work, that CRM depth goes unused.

The switching cost nobody talks about

According to the MYOB Business Monitor 2023, 61% of small trade businesses underestimate software switching costs by more than 40% (cited via ServiceScale.com.au, source). That number doesn’t surprise anyone who’s been through a migration.

The subscription is the easy part. Here’s what the first year actually looks like:

ServiceM8, three-person team:

  • Subscription: ~$948 (Growing plan × 12)
  • Setup and data import: 2–4 weeks of evening hours, or $1,500–$2,500 if you pay someone to do it
  • Training: roughly 5 hours per person to reach functional competency
  • Lost productivity during changeover: 1–2 weeks where jobs take 20–30% longer while the team gets up to speed
  • Realistic first-year total cost: $4,500–$6,000

Tradify, three-person team:

  • Subscription: ~$1,872 (Pro plan, 3 users × 12)
  • Implementation: 4–8 weeks if you’re migrating from spreadsheets; expect 20–40 hours of data cleanup
  • Training is steeper, Tradify’s interface has more depth, which means more to learn and longer to bed in
  • Realistic first-year total cost: $6,000–$8,500 depending on data complexity

The point isn’t that one platform is better than the other. It’s that the decision should factor in the full first-year cost, not just the monthly subscription you see on the pricing page. A platform that costs $80/month more but gets your team productive in four weeks instead of eight may actually be cheaper to switch to.

Run the free trial. But a two-week trial doesn’t simulate a full job history migration, customer record import, or a three-person team learning a new system while still running jobs. Budget the migration before you commit to anything.

AI has inside each platform

Most tradies don’t know these exist inside the platforms they’re already paying for.

Tradify SmartTools generates AI-assisted quotes from job descriptions. It’s on the Plus plan only ($62/user/month), so you’re paying $10/user/month extra on top of Pro for the privilege. You describe the job in plain English and the system drafts a quote structure. Useful for standard repeat jobs, a switchboard upgrade you’ve quoted dozens of times, less useful for unusual or complex work where experience is doing the heavy lifting anyway. It won’t replace estimating ability, but it speeds up the quoting process on familiar work.

ServiceM8 includes automated client communications: booking confirmations sent automatically when a job is scheduled, ETA texts when a tech is on the way, follow-up messages after job completion. It’s not generative AI, but it automates the communication touchpoints that sole traders typically forget when they’re slammed, and it keeps clients informed without any manual effort.

Fergus doesn’t have a notable AI feature at the time of writing.

None of these platforms replace a dedicated AI tool for tradies. They’re a starting point, the AI layer inside the job management system you’re already running. Once you’ve picked your platform and bedded it in, the next step is knowing what else is worth adding on top. See: AI Tools for Electricians →

The short version

  • ServiceM8 if you’re two to six people doing reactive service work, you’re on iPhones, and keeping the back office simple matters more than deep project tracking
  • Tradify if you need proper job costing, your crew runs Android phones, or your jobs run longer than a single day
  • Fergus if recurring maintenance contracts are your core business model and a proper CRM is worth paying for

Get the team size question right first. Then run the numbers with the table above. The monthly subscription is never the whole story, but it’s still the right place to start.
