Ask a plumber what they think of AI and you’ll probably get a grunt. Maybe a laugh. “That’s for office people, mate.”

Fair enough. The headlines about AI are mostly written by people who’ve never quoted a job on a phone in a Bunnings car park. But something has shifted in the past 12 months. The tradies who were writing off AI are starting to pay attention, not because it’s trendy, but because the ones who’ve tried it are quoting faster, winning more jobs, and getting home earlier.

Here’s what’s actually happening on the ground.

The problem AI is actually solving

The Australian Bureau of Statistics counts more than 330,000 construction and trade businesses in Australia. Most of them run lean, one person, maybe a small crew. The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman puts the average admin time for small business owners at 15 hours a week. For a tradie, that’s 15 hours not on the tools.

Quoting eats a big chunk of that. Writing scope of works, pricing materials, formatting a PDF, sending a follow-up, it adds up. And the stakes are real: research from the Housing Industry Association shows the first tradie to quote wins the job 60% of the time. Slow quotes lose work.

Where AI is actually landing

Quoting and estimates

This is the area with the most traction. Tools like Buildxact, Fergus, and Tradify have AI built into their quoting workflows, snap a photo on site, fill in a few fields, and they generate a costed estimate with branded PDF in minutes instead of an hour. Buildxact claims 22% faster job wins and 40% less admin time for users who’ve switched.

Plenty of tradies are also using ChatGPT for a simpler version: paste in the job details, get a scope of works written in plain English, then copy it into their own template. Not flashy, but it works.

SWMS and compliance docs

Safe Work Method Statements are the other big win. Tradies who used to spend an hour on a SWMS for a standard job are getting it done in 15 minutes with a well-structured prompt. The output still needs a human check, AI doesn’t know your site conditions, but the scaffolding is there and it cuts the friction.

Phone answering

One of the more practical innovations is AI phone answering. Services like Sophiie AI and CallTradie handle calls when you’re on the tools, logging job details, answering basic questions, queuing callbacks. For sole traders who miss emergency calls because they can’t pick up, this is real money.

Job management platforms

Tools like ServiceM8 and simPRO have added AI-assisted job notes, scheduling, and dispatch. The AI doesn’t replace your process, it fills in the boring parts of it.

What’s holding most tradies back

The National AI Centre’s adoption tracker (run by Fifth Quadrant) puts Australian SME AI adoption at around 35%, and construction and trades come in below the national average. Three barriers show up repeatedly:

  • Data security worries (33%). Tradies don’t want client details, site addresses, or job data sitting in some offshore AI system. This is a legitimate concern, not paranoia. Most tools worth using have clear data policies, worth reading before you sign up.
  • Not knowing where to start (28%). “AI” is a big, vague word. When you don’t know which tool solves which problem, it’s easier to do nothing.
  • Cost uncertainty (26%). Off-the-shelf quoting tools run $30–$80 a month. Job management platforms are $30–$100. AI phone services are typically $100–$300. The ROI is there for most tradies who try them, but the upfront commitment feels risky if you’ve been burned by software before.

Regional tradies face an extra hurdle, they’re 11% less likely to adopt AI than metro counterparts, mostly because there’s less access to people who can help them get started.

Where to start if you’re sceptical

Don’t try to overhaul your whole business. Pick one problem that costs you time every week and try AI on just that.

If quoting takes too long: try Tradify or Fergus for a month. If you spend hours on SWMS: give ChatGPT a go with a structured prompt. If you miss calls while on the tools: look at an AI answering service.

The 87% of Australian SMEs who’ve brought in AI tools report cost and time savings (CBA research). That’s not a guarantee, some tools don’t fit every business, but the hit rate is high enough that the risk of trying is lower than the risk of ignoring it while your competitors catch up.

The first-to-quote stat cuts both ways. If someone else in your area is quoting twice as fast because they’re using AI, you’re not just losing time, you’re losing jobs.
